A GoFundMe started by the group “The Wall Fundraising Team” has raised more than $7 million in just 3 days!
The GoFundMe page is titled “We The People Will Fund The Wall”. It was created on December 16th. The total fundraising goal is the $1 billion it would take to build the border wall between the U.S. and Mexico.
The GoFundMe page gives no clear indication of how exactly the donations will be used.
Leading Up to GoFundMe
President Donald Trump may have put aside his threats of a government shutdown over funding for his proposed border wall, but there may be another way for him to acquire the funds: GoFundMe.
Days after a New York Post op-ed asked why no one had launched a GoFundMe to fund the border wall, Trump supporter Brian Kolfage answered the article’s call. The triple amputee and military veteran launched the campaign on Dec. 16, setting an initial goal of $200 million.
Trump VS Congress
The fundraiser comes as the White House and Capitol Hill remain deadlocked over President Donald Trump’s threat to shut down the government if Congress does not approve $5 billion in funding for a border wall.
While building a wall along the southern border was one of President Trump’s main campaign promises, his attempts to secure funding have so far been unsuccessful. President Trump assured voters on the campaign trail that Mexico would pay for the wall, but he has since walked backed that assertion and looked toward Congress for funding.
A Senate budget proposal passed Wednesday does not include the $5 billion requested by Trump, but keeps border security funding at current levels. The proposal will next go to the House, where it needs to be passed ahead of the Friday deadline.
